School is coming to a close and summer is fast approaching. For many families, summertime includes a trip to the beach — and what better time to learn about the ocean than by reading children’s books about the ocean.
Children and adults are equally fascinated by the ocean, its vastness, its power, and the fascinating creatures that call the ocean their home. The ocean makes up 70% of the surface of the earth (source) and it’s estimated that 50 – 80% of all life can be found under the ocean surface (source).
Many people have a sense of reverence, peace and increased happiness when they are near the ocean. There’s a reason for that — researchers have found a correlation between water and the human brain. “Our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken,” says Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols.
If you aren’t able to visit the ocean in person any time soon, explore the mysterious world under the sea through reading. Below are some of the best children’s books about the ocean, divided up by fictional picture books and informational non-fiction books about the ocean. All topics about the ocean are covered — sea animals, fish, ocean patterns, and charming stories with lovable sea characters.
